Then we entered steep competition with each other to get into colleges. At my University they seemed to accept a few hundred more Freshmen than they could comfortably accommodate, then they forced us all to take a mandatory pre-med bio-lab course which I believe they used to weed out the bottom students. Of course, they first squeezed an extra semester of tuition out of them before letting them go.
Those of us who graduated from college soon found there weren’t enough jobs to go around. Many worked for years to get a good education with hopes of becoming teachers or other skilled professionals, but ended up taking clerk jobs at places like Kmart and the Piggly Wiggly.
Then, too, our mighty government tried to kill off a lot of our guy Boomers in Nam; do you think that may have been an intentional way to do away with the irksomeness of our generation’s overpopulation? Hmmmm.
Do you remember how our competition for housing drove up the prices? Who benefited? Not OUR generation. Now we are on the brink of the “Great Gray Tsunami”, as they say; we are pushing limits again – on senior housing and eventually I suppose for room in the cemeteries.
I happen to think we can and must work together to prepare the way for us Boomers. At this point in our lives, most of us have some clout and hard won wisdom. If we’re smart, we’ll work collaboratively to see that we don’t get shelved as useless members of this youth worshipping society. We’ll pass protective legislation & fight to receive compensation for our years of paying into the hopeless Social Security system.
I spent some time as Director of Social Services of a Skilled Nursing Facility (what they used to call a Nursing Home). Believe me when I tell you that you don’t want to go there. Even the best of these facilities provide a nightmarish loss of dignity and privacy. I pray to God He will take me home to Heaven before I ever require constant nursing care – but if He chooses not to, I want to be able to provide for my own care on my terms. And I don’t want to be fighting with my fellow Boomers for space in the dang places. There has to be a better way, and that way will take MONEY!
I’ve read that the average 50 year old – younger than us Boomers – has been able to set aside only $50,000, which isn’t enough to retire comfortably. They say you need a minimum of a Million dollars if you want to live on $3000 interest a month. Some of us feel we can NEVER retire; we’ll have to keep working just to stay afloat.
I retired in 2008 after years of working as Director of a Homeless Shelter for Women and Children. I’ve seen women in their 70s come to us after being found living in parks and under overpasses. Their families wouldn’t or couldn’t help them and they were alone and penniless. There has to be a better way to prepare for our twilight years.
You don’t make much money in Social Services and when I retired I had virtually nothing set aside. With only my husband’s pension and social security to keep us afloat, it soon became apparent that I had to find a new way to bring in money, and still have the freedom retirement afforded. Then, too, there was my concern that if my husband lived more than another 2 years, he would age-out of his insurance coverage and there would be no life insurance cushion to help me out. Yipes! Scary proposition!!
I figured the internet could provide me with a new source of income, so I tried running a website that hawked Chinese imports at inflated prices. It soon became apparent that nobody needed more “stuff” and the supplier I was using didn’t really care about anything but their own profits.
I felt scammed and used and angry at myself for falling for their pitch. Then I cut my losses, did my research and I found an amazing, very real, very legitimate high compensation online opportunity with an exceptional financial education product I believe in – and wish I had used in planning for my retirement years ago. I also found two fantastic health support systems that have helped me tremendously.
I found out it’s not too late – I can still use my wisdom, creativity, ambition and spunk to go after real, legitimate money through internet sales. We Boomers are resourceful and we can help ease our later years by easily learning new skills we can use to work from home, or while we travel. And we can support each other by networking effectively and endorsing each other’s efforts.
I know it can be scary worrying about all the scams you hear about on the internet. But there ARE legitimate online opportunities that can help you, too, find real success with no BS. Where else, but the internet, can we quickly make the kind of money we need for our retirement years? There are lots of opportunities out there – find one you can be proud of, with responsive coaching and a small, risk-free, start-up fee – and go for it! I believe the only way we can yet prepare for our twilight years is through our own entrepreneurial efforts.
IF WE DON’T PREPARE NOW FOR OUR OLD AGE, WE WILL ONCE AGAIN BE VICTIMS OF A SOCIETY THAT ISN’T PREPARED FOR US.
